Professor Guilford will discuss what has been happening on campus and the University’s plans for the future. It has been a big year already for Victoria University of Wellington on several fronts. The Tertiary Education Commission’s recent Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) assessment confirmed it has a larger proportion of academics conducting high-quality research than any other university in New Zealand. The University is also in the final stages of refreshing its Strategic Plan, which will help build on recent successes and set new goals for the 2019-2024 period.
One of the central aims of the plan will be to boost its international reputation, building on the work the University has already started on refreshing its visual brand. The focus is to reflect the enduring partnership between the University and the capital city, by emphasising and celebrating the word Wellington and incorporating its new Māori name: Te Herenga Waka.
Professor Guilford has been Vice-Chancellor at Victoria University of Wellington since March 2014. He was previously the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Auckland and a member of its Senior Management Team.
