New Zealand Symphony Orchestra

A programme that will include:
Lilburn Aotearoa Overture
Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending
Elgar Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1

The tradition of the British and Irish Lions Rugby Tour was established over 100 years ago and, according to loyal supporters, it has been a century littered with magical moments.

In the spirit of creating magical moments we present a festival of stirring and nostalgic music from across the same century to celebrate our Commonwealth partners during this year’s Lion’s Tour to New Zealand.

Indulge in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ chart-topping The Lark Ascending and revel in Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Listen out for surprise bagpipes at the end of Peter Maxwell Davis’ An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise and enjoy the unabashed optimism of Douglas Lilburn’s iconic Aotearoa Overture.

New Zealand’s favourite mezzo, Helen Medlyn will guide the audience through a medley of familiar anthems from the Lions’ Nations such as the Welsh favourite All Through the Night and Percy Grainger’s recognisable Irish Tune from County Derry, better known as Danny Boy, and culminating in our own Pokarekare Ana.
