About

The Wellington Club (Te Pou Maruwehi), established in December 1841, is the oldest private club in New Zealand. It is a great place to meet new people & make new friends. Membership is vibrant and currently sits at over 1,500 members. The Club admits men and women from a wide variety of professions, reflecting New Zealand’s diverse community and interests. Membership is by invitation and requires the support of existing members.

Members enjoy outstanding amenities & a sophisticated setting over three floors. The Clubhouse has contemporary & attractive premises on the fourth & sixth floors, and a more formal fifth floor, which upholds the tradition that still plays an important part in daily Club life. The Club is spacious, private and well-appointed & enables members to meet friends, family & colleagues in comfortable surroundings, host a party, or simply find a quiet place to relax & dine.

The Wellington Club is renowned for its premium facilities which cater for up to 160 guests at dinners, weddings and other seated functions and up to 350 guests for cocktail parties and other standing events. There are flexible arrangements within the Club's small and large meeting and private dining rooms to adjust for differing numbers and requirements. Kitchens located on the 5th and 6th floors, both provide top quality New Zealand cuisine. All floors are equipped with WiFi technology and up-to-date audio-visual equipment is available.

Modern bar and café

Drake’s Acre is a stylish and contemporary bar and café, the perfect spot for breakfast, a light lunch or casual drink. Drake’s Acre is open to Members throughout the day, and spectacular views can be enjoyed equally during the day or evening. A small balcony overlooks The Terrace, providing a wonderful spot to relax, while enjoying an “al fresco” lunch or morning tea. Daily newspapers and popular journals are available in the bar.


Morrison Room

Small private dining room overlooking Wellington Harbour.

The Morrison Room can be used for private breakfasts, lunches and dinner or other business functions. The room has an amazing view over The Terrace, down Woodward Street and a glimpse of the harbour. It can accommodate up to 30 guests (on two tables) for dinner or a theatre-style presentation.

The Kumutoto Room is named after the Kumutoto Pa, which was located where The Wellington Club is currently situated, and the nearby Kumutoto stream. The Kumutoto Room on the sixth floor, boasts fabulous facilities. It has a a built-in projector and 100” screen which can show PowerPoint, TV, DVDs and has a document camera port. It has also a high quality sound system available for private functions.

The PresIdent’s Room

The Terrace Room (or Main Dining Room) and the President’s Room can seat up to 140 guests or offer a standing cocktail reception for up to 250.

With its high ceilings and large windows overlooking The Terrace, the Main Dining Room has a character unlike any other venue in Wellington. It speaks of history and class, so rare and special. The Main Dining Room can seat up to 160 guests comfortably. This room can also be separated into one larger and one smaller private dining room. It is the most popular room for cocktail receptions by members of the Diplomatic Corps on such occasions as National Day Celebrations due to its large capacity of up to 350 guests

Our fifth floor bar

An exquisite blend of contemporary design and cherished history, the Ante Room is comforting and welcoming. The perfect spot to begin your function at The Wellington Club with pre-lunch or pre-dinner drinks, or to even hold a cocktail reception for up to 150 guests. The large semi-circular windows look out over The Terrace and down Woodward Street to Lambton Quay. Beautiful leather chairs are placed by the windows to make the most of the sun.

A large and most impressive Billiard Room boasts four full-sized slate-topped tables of international playing standard. The old hunting trophies and competition cups displayed add to the sporting atmosphere.


Fourth Floor


Wellesley Room

Overlooking the Terrace & our beautiful Pohutakawa Tree

The Wellesley Room is perfect for medium-sized functions. It can accommodate up to 60 guests for a cocktail reception and includes a private bar. Located on the fourth floor, it can be used also for drinks after meetings held in the McCarthy or Featherston Rooms.


Reading Room

A place to relax & unwind.

With a library atmosphere of peace and quiet together with comfortable armchairs, the Reading Room is a sanctuary to escape the bustle and catch up on some reading and current events. New Zealand newspapers, international business magazines and a collection of old and new books are available for Members to browse.


McCarthy Room

The Club has a number of meetings rooms available to suit your needs. The ground floor suites and the fourth floor business centre are suitable for smaller, informal meetings, while the Featherston and McCarthy rooms are perfect for board meetings or conferences during the day. Separately, the Featherston and McCarthy rooms seat up to 8 and 14 guests, respectively. Together, the larger space may seat 22 guests.

Suitable for meetings or private dining, the Featherston Room can accommodate up to 10 people seated at a table. Boasting natural light and windows facing the Terrace, this is a beautiful room to hold board meetings during the day.
