Exercise for Older Adults
We all need strength and balance in our life. Literally. There are many reasons for balance issues: loss of muscle strength, joint flexibility, inner ear dysfunction, vision, slower reaction, medical conditions and medication. Balance is vital to normal everyday activities. Just about everything you do in life, whether for work or leisure requires balance control. Falls at any age can be dangerous but falls become increasingly common after the age of 55. Approx 1 in 3 over 65 will fall, for people aged 80 years and over the risk increases to 1 in 2 according to Health Quality & Safety Commission NZ. We have classes dedicated to falls prevention here at the club for older adults.

Pilates is rapidly becoming one of the most highly regarded exercise techniques world-wide. Pilate’s form of exercise emphasises the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, strengthening and elongating muscles. It works well for a wide range of people. Athletes and dancer love it, as do seniors, women rebounding from pregnancy and people at various stages of physical rehabilitation.
Fully trained and certified Pilates and a Restorative Exercise Specialist will deliver classes at The Wellington Club.
Monday 5:15pm, Tuesday 7:00am and Friday 12:00pm.
Spinning is a cycle class workout which is an excellent way to burn some calories and relieve stress. The workout employs a stationary bike, which has various tension levels. A spinning workout of 45 minutes may allow you to burn around 500 calories. The workout focus is also on building strength through the lower limbs including core muscles and as a low impact workout this means that it won’t put pressure on knees and joints. Sprints, hill climbs and interval training is everything you can expect in a 45 mins workout.
Spin is a great stress reliever due to the fact that the workout is intensive and it is a class where you can meet people and socialise.
Monday 1:00pm, Tuesday 5:30pm and Thursday 6:45am
Start date to be confirmed (we're awaiting the delivery of our new Spin Cycles!)
