Victoria at the Club: Who do we trust in New Zealand? Why is it important?

Dr Simon Chapple will speak about what we know about trust in various institutions in New Zealand, and recent changes in trust locally and globally, primarily utilising the two Institute for Governance and Policy Studies of VUW Trust surveys of 2016 and 2018.

The surveys analyse why trust is important to a successfully functioning society, including its social, environmental and economic dimensions, and examines how we might better understand the processes which lie behind changes in trust. It does so with a view to better understanding how to support a high trust society.

Dr Simon Chapple has been Director of the Institute for Governance and Policy Studies in the School of Government at Victoria University since 2017. Before moving into the university sector, he worked at a senior level in the New Zealand public service and overseas at the OECD in Paris, as well as in the private sector for the NZIER. Amongst other roles, he edited the OECD’s social indicators publication, Society at a Glance.
